June 6/2000 - Build Update 11

Well folks, this will be the last update before the big show. The robot is finished (for the most part) and I think that it is preforming pretty well. It doesn't walk as smoothly with all the turret and whatnot on top of it, but it still walks well enough. Anyways, to all you who can make it to Battlebots, if you see me say hello! - Derek.

Suggested Listening During Early June Robot Building, Robot Fighting and Overnight Driving:

Jimmy Cliff - Harder They Come
Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual
The last thing to do is to fully tear down the robot and assembly it properly. Here's the stripped frame and some of the components laying about.
The stripped frame with the freshly installed "brownies" over the mounting bolts which are ultra low durometer rubber bushings to absorb impact.
The CO2 rig. The regulator is adjustable by the big black dial. From testing, the tank should be good for 200 up and down motions of the ground bar, which is plenty for 3 minutes.
Tremclad SUCKS! Not only did it react with the original finish on the winch, it also takes FOREVER to dry. Nice and bright orange though.
I painted the frame a flat primer grey. Flat paint, as used on SOS too, helps to hide the more poor looking welds. I started by mounting the drive motor and working my way outwards from that.
More building outwards, mounting the turret drive system and brake.
More than a few hours later, all of the components are on.
The complete robot, with the 1/4" titanium plate axe shaft. The wooden trolley is new as well. It is something I should have built a month ago.
A shot of the side with all the pretty painted bits.
Mad chain tensioner yo. A quick 15 minute solution to a tensioning problem.
The robot and the mayhem. Holes in the broken scale, holes in the lexan, holes in the wood, holes in the floor, etc etc... :) All courtesy of my shiney new rock chisel -- pointy!
I did a demo earlier today at school for some of the engineering students and faculty at SFU. Here I am in one of the meeting rooms at my school with Pressure Drop after it laid the beats into an old P150 tower.
With the competition coming up, I thought I'd show you the R/C fighting robot art that I have hanging on my wall. It is a signed and numbered (297/700) print of a Coop poster for a Man or Astroman show. I really like his work, mostly girls, hot-rods, girls, robots, devils, devil girls etc. Low-brow art at its finest. For those of you with the taste for the bizzare (and not easily shocked or offendend for that matter), check out more of his stuff at www.coopstuff.com -- I think he'd make a great BattleBots event poster... :)
