May 13/2000 - Build Update 9

I got an E-mail from a fighting robot fan, and he made a page with a count down timer to BattleBots, so here it is: http://jake404.tripod.com/battlebots/battlebot.htm. The robot is coming together fast and furiously. I am getting the motor controller solenoids (from Grainger) this coming week, and I hope to get the pneumatics finished too. I'm still looking for a regulator that'll go to 80 psi from liquid CO2. Anyways, on with the pictures. - Derek.

The newly welded weapon frame/turret. 1" tubing, some of it I TIG welded which I found to be very difficult and slow. I gave up with it, and powered up the wire feed MIG, with which it came together quickly.
A shot of the weapon frame from above. I tested out the turret motor system by sitting on top of the frame, and having it spin me around. It worked pretty well. I think that I might make an adaptor to mount a swivel office chair on the top. Total evil scientist machine. Riding around on a self rotating chair on a walking robot.
The also newly welded armour frame. It was a shame to cover up the legs, but you have to do what you have to do to survive in the ring. Once it is panelled in with 1/4"-3/8" Lexan (left clear to show off the innards), it should be plenty durable.
A shot of the front of the armour frame. I figured this part of the robot would see the most abuse, so I doubled up on the vertical steel risers. I placed them directly in front of the air cylinders to protect them from potential nastiness.
My first finished prop. This is for the television show "First Wave". I did the electronics and lighting (illuminated yellow side lights, and a Knight Rider-esque LED tracer) as well as some of the fabrication. I hope to start up a portfolio of props that I have worked on.
Slam City Jam - one of the largest skateboard competitions in North America was held last weekend here in Vancouver. We went on the Sunday to check out the finals. Here's a sequence of Rick McCrank pulling a large backside 180 grab over the large booter. Oh yeah, here's another reason to go to skate contests :)
