Los Angeles... The first thing I noticed, other than the traffic, is just how enormous the city is. It took us 2 hours to get across the city to our motel in Long Beach. En route, we traveled though the scary bits of Long Beach, which were a few blocks west of our motel. Three kids in the middle of Los Angeles in a rental car with Canadian plates... you get the idea. After checking in, we hit the local plaza and picked up some cheap americano beer and the local entertainment guide. Considering the number of clubs in the Los Angeles area, as compared to Vancouver, I figured something cool had to be happening that night. Just as a comparison, Pollstar has 166 concert listings for the Vancouver area right now, and has 1154 listings for LA. As it turned out, something good was happening: the Muffs, a very good power-pop/punk band was playing at a club in West Hollywood. Cool! We drove over to the CSULB Pyramid (about 5 minutes away) to check things out, they were just getting the arena up, it looked awesome! After that we hung out at the motel a bit more, and then left for the show. Driving at night was completely different than during the day, light traffic and everyone was going 140 km/h... Cool again! It only took us 20 minutes to get to the other side of LA this time. On the way we through Beverly Hills (I think) into Hollywood we saw the Playboy building amongst other sights. The club, the Troubadour, was in a really nice part of town, so I was wondering how they made any money with a capacity of 250 and $10 tickets... I think the $4.25US Coronas had something to do with it. The Muffs ended up being really good, and as a bonus, CC DeVille, the guitarist from the 80’s hair-metal band Poison sat down right beside me and stayed there to air-drum away to the whole show! Nutty! After leaving the show, we heading into Hollywood and got some pizza on
the walk of fame. We looked for the Hollywood sign, but after not finding
it, headed back to the motel -- but not before checking out "Hustler
Hollywood".. LA certainly is "Sin City" (or is that Las Vegas? -- I'll
have to go there too.) I have to live here some time in my life.
