Rather than give a long winded play by play account of me building the robot, I have decided to pull a trick out of my high school level English bag and create a photo-essay. As they say, a pictures say a thousand words, and I’m sick of typing. If you think this way sucks and is annoying, E-mail me and I might do some thumbnail pages for you. Before we get started, I’ll take a hint from all the UK robot pages I’ll give you a list of specifications of the robot:

Robot Name: Son of Smashy
Class: Megabot (Middleweight)
Weight: 113 lb.
Drive Motors: 4 Dynetic Systems Servo Motors. 7000 rpm no load. Approx 10 amps @ 24V @ stall each ~ 1 hp total... maybe..;)
Drive train: Tank style, 2 motors on each side. 32 Pitch hardened steel gears 7:1 ratio to 35 pitch chain drive 3.5:1 ratio giving 24.5:1 final ratio, approximate top speed 8 km/hour (yes, it’s slow)
Wheels: 6" Lawnmower Duallies.
Batteries: 1 Yuasa 5ah 12V, 1 Magnacharge 18ah 12V in series.
Speed Control: Vantec RDFR 22
Radio Control: JR 622 6 Channel FM Radio, tuned to Ground Frequency channel 86. Deans Slim Line boat antenna. With caps on everything --> no interference.
Drive Module Frame: Welded 6061 aluminum tube and plate
Main Platform Frame: Welded mild steel tubing (0.0625" wall, varying sizes)
Weapon: Smashing Stick, smashy maul, smashy thing.. etc. (6 lb splitting maul on a 24" or so shaft)
Weapon power: Custom wound torsion spring. 120 ft-lb. @ 180 degrees
Retracting mechanism: 2000lb ATV winch
Winch controller: 2 servos and some brass bars run by a PIC 16C84 and a microswitch
Armour: 1/8" - 1/4" Lexan on everything, drive module covered by 10 layer kevlar/carbon fibre shell
